Most buffering problems come from the home network, not the stream. Knowing your real speed, and what affects it, helps you fix them in minutes. This guide covers the speed you need for each picture quality, how to test your connection properly and the fixes that work best.
Use this table as a rough guide for one stream at a time:
| Picture quality | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 3 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| HD (720p / 1080p) | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| Full HD sport and fast action | 10 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 4K | 25 Mbps | 35 Mbps or more |
If several people watch at the same time, add the numbers together and leave some room for everything else that uses your connection.
Example: two TVs watching in HD (2 × 10 Mbps) plus phones and laptops in use (about 10 Mbps) need around 30 Mbps. An internet plan of 50 Mbps gives you comfortable headroom.

If your evening tests are regularly below the speeds in the table, even with a cable, the limit is your internet plan. Ask your provider about a faster plan or fibre. A cable or a better router cannot fix a connection that is too slow.
